You won’t just hear about history. You’ll find yourself in the middle of it.

The Painting That Sparked Restoration

In the early 1960s, industrialist Edward E. Montgomery and his wife Frances encountered Dean Cornwell’s 24-by-8-foot mural depicting a bustling canal town.
The image posed a simple question: What if this village could stand again where it once had?
That question became Historic Roscoe Village.
As part of our Time Traveler’s Tales series, join local historian Chris Hart as he interprets the painting and brings to life the story that inspired a movement, where art led to restoration and vision became legacy.
Today, that very mural remains on view in Coshocton and is recognized as part of Murals Across Ohio, an official America 250-Ohio initiative celebrating Ohio’s artistic and civic heritage.
