Blacksmiths played a vital role in canal towns like Roscoe Village, crafting tools, hardware, and everyday necessities that kept communities running.

In this hands-on introductory class, participants will learn the foundational skills of traditional blacksmithing, including working at the hammer and anvil, operating coal and gas forges, and practicing classic techniques such as bending and twisting metal. Proper blacksmithing safety, just as important then as it is now, will be emphasized throughout the class.

As part of the experience, participants will create their own handcrafted S-hook and fire poker to take home. Practical pieces that reflect the skills and craftsmanship of early blacksmiths.
